How does our history connect to our lives? As social scientists, we explore how our ancient past still shapes us - how geography, migration & natural resources to religion, power & culture combine. We discover our identity, community & place in global history, as we explore the fascinating legacies of ancient civilizations. We reinforce critical-thinking, writing, reading, speaking & listening skills as we analyze how past civilizations impact the future of ourselves and society! ¿Qué es Historia en REALM? ¿De qué manera la historia humana se conectan a nuestras vidas hoy? Como científicos sociales, exploraremos cómo nuestro pasado todavía nos forma - de la geografía, migración, recursos naturales (a la religión, el poder y cultura) vamos a descubrir nuestra identidad, comunidad y historia mundial a medida que exploramos los legados de las civilizaciones antiguas! Syllabus: Grade 6 Social Studies • Ancient Civilizations @ REALM
What does 6th Grade Social Studies cover? We explore the essential questions: “How does ancient history shape us? How does evidence help us understand the past? How do resources or geography impact civilizations?” We investigate our identity, community and place in global history while discovering how ancient civilizations rose and transformed, using critical-thinking, writing, reading & presentation skills while analyzing how civilizations shape human society, and us!
What do we LEARN + DO?
The social structures, government, technology, religion, art & language of ancient Africa, Middle East, India, China, Greece & Rome; we conduct research, discuss civics, sustainability & human-environment interaction, differentiate fact from opinion & create artistic projects.
What do we READ? Non-fiction articles, novels, short stories, textbook + more
What do we WRITE? Free-writes, & reflections, Research Reports, Narratives: Biographical & Autobiographical, Art/Cave Drawings & short stories, Responses to literature, Presentations: Oral, active, & multi-media, Letters, speeches and interviews, Persuasive & Compare/Contrast essays
What SUPPLIES must I bring DAILY?
1) A Notebook: 3- or 5-Subject, spiral-bound notebook (with pocket dividers for handouts)
2) Your Homework Folder: For all classes, with HW LOG & complete work inside (2 pockets) * Folder LIVES IN YOUR BACKPACK, so it doesn’t get forgotten at home, in class or lockers
3) Utensils: Black/Blue ink pens only, erasers, Highlighters, sharpener & mini-stapler.
4) Health: Come well-FED & WELL-RESTED (8 hrs/night!); Water bottle & snacks keep brains focused & bodies awake!
What if I’m ABSENT or LATE? E-mail or talk to Luna right away to catch-up on work!
• You have 1 day for each day you’re absent to turn in missed work. • Unexcused late work receives HALF-CREDIT :( • Need more time? Tell me 1+ day before! A blue on-time stamp is proof it was completed on time, when class began.
How am I GRADED? Your grade = effort + completion of…
1) Assignments: Class work & homework must be on-time & high quality. 2) Participation: Based on overall behavior, attitude, respect, attendance & tardies 3) Projects: Reports, essays & presentations are graded with a rubric. You MUST RE-WRITE work below a “B-” grade (or incomplete work) to get credit!
How do I earn EXTRA CREDIT? VOLUNTEERING raises your grade! ☺ I keep track when you show good citizenship & care by going “above & beyond”: Help a classmate or a friend in need, Clean-up / set-up, Share your ideas, Show leadership, REALM pride, positive encouragement, discourage put-downs!

• RESPONSIBILITY - means you… Always do your best + be honest (no copying) • Talk to me when you’re absent or feeling sad, Use passing period ONLY for water or restrooms • Stand-up against bullying - tell an adult!
